About Signal Hill, California
Signal Hill is a small, independent city completely surrounded by Long Beach, rising about 365 feet above the surrounding coastal plain. The Tongva people once used the hilltop to send signal fires visible for miles, even as far as Santa Catalina Island, which is how the hill got its name. Spanish land grants later placed the area within Rancho Los Cerritos and Rancho Los Alamitos, and by the early 1900s stately homes dotted the hilltop for their panoramic views.
Everything changed on June 23, 1921, when the Alamitos No. 1 well struck oil, turning Signal Hill into one of the richest oil fields in the world and earning it the nickname "Porcupine Hill" for its forest of derricks. The city incorporated in 1924 to remain independent from Long Beach. Today, Discovery Well Park and the Tribute to the Roughnecks statue on Skyline Drive commemorate that history, while Hilltop Park offers residents sweeping views of the Pacific, Catalina Island, and the Los Angeles skyline.
Signal Hill's compact residential streets and hillside neighborhoods sit just off the 405 and 710 freeways, giving families quick access to Long Beach Blvd and Cherry Ave when they need to reach our funeral home in North Long Beach.
Getting Here from Signal Hill
Our funeral home and on-site crematory are about 4 miles from Signal Hill at 5443 Long Beach Blvd in Long Beach, roughly a 10-minute drive. Most families head south on Cherry Ave or Long Beach Blvd, crossing under the 405 into North Long Beach, where our chapel is easy to spot and offers convenient on-site parking.
If the drive is a hardship for your family, let us know when you call, and we will make the arrangements as convenient as possible.
