Wayne Sackett Obituary

Wayne T. Sackett of Long Beach, California went to be with his Lord on Monday August 26, 2019 after a long and happy walk on this earth with Jesus.

Wayne was born in Pasadena, California to Elmer and Thelma Sackett on February 13, 1926. In  1942 he graduated from the high school, which was part of Pasadena City Junior College and then attended college courses there prior to joining the Navy in 1944.  Wayne served honorably as a machinist mate on the USS Raby destroyer escort in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

Wayne learned about his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, from his maternal grandmother, Amanda Gray, who was a wonderful Christian woman.  He firmly remembered learning that Jesus had died for his sins while he was playing with figures depicting the life of Christ in a pre-school sand play table at First Baptist Church of Alhambra.  He always knew, that while he was only a child of 4 or five, it was then that he accepted Christ as his savior.

Wayne's father passed away due to illness in 1938 when was just twelve.    During the tough times of the depression Wayne was lovingly cared for by his maternal grandmother and step-grandfather Emery and Cora Lynes.   Wayne was forever grateful for their care, and when they were elderly, he traveled each weekend from Long Beach to Alhambra to visit with them, buy their groceries and help care for their home.
After his discharge from the Navy, Wayne used his GI Bill to complete his accounting degree t in 1949 at the old Pepperdine College downtown Los Angeles campus.

Wayne met his future wife, Irma Jean Dahlgren, at Immanuel Baptist Church in Pasadena, California.  They were married in August 1948 while he was still in college.  They enjoyed 71 years of happy marriage before Jesus called him home.

After graduation, Wayne worked for a short-time at Hughes aircraft, but God arranged for his car to be stolen, and during the process of recovering his car he met a Christian man who worked for Shell Oil Company who thought Wayne would be a good man for Shell.  Wayne joined Shell in 1950 and worked for over 35 years at the Wilmington, CA Refinery and Los Angeles Data Center before retiring in 1986.

In 1952 Wayne and Irma bought a home in the Los Altos area of Long Beach where they raised their family and happily lived together.  Over the years they worshipped at Lakewood Baptist Church and Bethany Baptist Church (Long Beach) where at various times Wayne served as a Sunday School teacher, Deacon and Trustee. For over ten years they have worshipped at Cornerstone Church where they have loved the Godly teaching of Pastor Jerry Rueb

Wayne was preceded into Heaven by his parents, Elmer Sackett and Thelma Wilson, his beloved son-in-law, James Vern Wessman and his beloved grandson, Paul Edwin Cook.  Wayne's memory will be cherished by his children, Ruth Lorraine Wessman of Hudson, Wisconsin, Joseph Wayne Sackett and his wife Jade of Long Beach, Mary Beth Sackett and her husband Melville Cook of Yorba Linda and Paul Stanley Sackett and his wife Stacy of Kingwood, Texas as well as eight serving grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the late Dr. Donald Chung,  Dr. Edward Glassberg, Dr. J. Ryan Thompson and Dr. Aditya Prasad for the expert and kind care that they provided to Wayne over the years.
