Robert Eugene Mayer

October 28, 1951 – June 29th, 2025

It is with reflection and remembrance that we announce the passing of Robert (Bob) Eugene Mayer, a lifelong resident of Long Beach, California. Born on October 28, 1951, to Blaine Everette Mayer and Barbara Jean Mayer (Smith), Bob spent his life in Southern California pursuing his work, hobbies, and personal interests.

Bob built his career at Harold Johnson Optical in Gardena, California, where he was known for his technical skill and dedication. Outside of work, he had a love for motorcycles, camping, and deep-sea fishing — passions that gave him a sense of freedom and adventure.

He was married to Susan (Sooze) Mayer (Robinson) for 38 years, until her passing on July 30, 2019. Together, they shared a life built around family, independence, and time spent in nature.

Bob is survived by his three sons: Norman Michael Mayer, Matthew Everette Mayer, and Jason Eugene Mayer. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Austin Mayer, Blaine Mayer, Grant Mayer, Joshua Mayer, Jason Mayer Jr., Vincent Mayer, and his granddaughter Madeline Mayer. In addition, he leaves behind his older brother Barry Mayer, older sister Linda Gwaltney, and younger sister Janice Mayer.

Though life brought its share of distance and complexities, those who knew Bob will remember his adventurous spirit, love for the ocean, and independent nature.

In keeping with his appreciation for the outdoors, the family encourages others to spend time outside, take a ride, or cast a line in his memory.
